A message from our Directors:
We built IMPACT on the idea that interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration drives discovery and is the key to solving the most complex health challenges.
By bringing together expertise from various research areas including laboratory science, clinical trials and epidemiology, we ensure that our research delivers real-world solutions, taking discoveries from bench to bedside.
In just six years, IMPACT has grown to nearly 400 members, a testament to the strength of a shared vision of our research community, support from Deakin, Barwon Health and our other partners, expertise of our researchers, and the shared commitment to improving mental and physical health outcomes.
This year, Deakin took a significant step forward with the establishment of the Barwon Health-Deakin Clinician Scientist Pathway, an initiative designed to nurture the next generation of clinician-researchers. These future leaders will help address some of the most urgent challenges in mental and physical health and beyond.
We also saw many of our researchers secure major funding for diverse projects that seek to shake up the current treatment landscape to drive better supports and interventions.
This includes $5 million to develop more effective treatments for schizophrenia, $3 million to support the RESET program which helps people return to work after a stroke, $1 million to investigate whether treating the gut can support those living with long COVID, and $838k to explore the mechanisms inside a red blood cell during malaria infection.
These achievements reflect the dedication and expertise that define IMPACT. As we look to the future, we remain committed to research that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives, empowering a healthier future for all.
Thank you to all who have contributed to another remarkable year.
We look forward to the discoveries that lie ahead.
